Like so many other events this year, fashion's biggest night is postponed in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Normally held on the first Monday in May, the event organisers announced ahead of time that the Gala, which would usually attract the biggest names in fashion, celebrities, film stars and the world's media, had been postponed, though it did not explain further if the event would be rescheduled for another date or cancelled.

In 2018, the Met combined with Gala itself was used as a central location for the film Oceans 8 starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna, and also featured cameo's from real-life Gala attendees Kylie and Kendall Jenner.
