Woody Allen’s New Film Shelved by Amazon

6 December 2018

In September 2017, writer and director Woody Allen returned to New York City to shoot his new film, “A Rainy Day in New York”, which starred Timothée Chalamet, Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Jude Law, Diego Luna and Liev Schreiber, and though filming was completed within a month, the film has yet to be released. Rumour has it, the distribution company Amazon Studios have actually shelved the project all together, although IMDB and Wikipedia have the release date as January 25, 2019.

The romantic comedy followed two young people who arrived in New York to spend a weekend, but once there, are met with bad weather and a series of adventures. Film locations include East 78th Street and 5th Avenue, East 6th Street and 1st Avenue, Broadway and N Moore, Price Street and Mercer Street, West 32nd Street and 7th Avenue, West 46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues, and Madison Avenue and East 77th Street.

The film's production coincided with the start of the Me Too movement, causing a resurgence in public interest in the 1992 sexual assault allegation against Allen. In October 2017, Griffin Newman announced via Twitter that he regretted acting in the film and would not work with Allen again in the future. Newman donated his salary to RAINN. In January 2018, Timothée Chalamet announced via his Instagram account that he also didn't want to profit from the film, donating his salary to RAINN, Time's Up and the LGBT Center of New York. Besides her brief appearance in “The Big Short”, this would have been Selena Gomez’s first feature-length New York-based film, but as such, it doesn’t seem likely that any of her fan-base will ever get to see it. It was reported that Selena made a donation exceeding her salary, over $1 million, to Time's Up, and in January 2018, Rebecca Hall also announced via Instagram that she regretted working on the film and would not work with Allen again in the future.

As of the end of November 2018, no release date has been announced, and no trailers or other promotional material have been distributed. A spokesperson for Allen stated that the film "will absolutely have a theatrical release in 2019", but would not identify a distributor given that Amazon productions is the owner of the film and has remained recalcitrant.
