Sleepless in Manhattan

18 June 2016

This week otsoNY caught up with USA TODAY's bestselling author Sarah Morgan, who has recently written a book called "Sleepless In Manhattan" about three best friends embracing life and love in the Big Apple. Sarah has sold more than 11 million copies of her books and although the city of New York inspires her writing, she actually lives in London.

Sarah explains, “Many of my all time favourite romantic movies have one thing in common, they’re all set in New York! It’s a city that inspires artists everywhere with its energy, excitement and romantic possibilities. This may be why every time I arrive in Manhattan I feel as if I’ve stepped onto a movie set. And having been lucky enough to visit the Big Apple myself a handful of times, I couldn’t help but be stirred by it all, which inspired me to come up with the idea for my new From Manhattan With Love series, which starts with book #1, Sleepless In Manhattan.”

To celebrate the release of the first book, Sarah shares her top 5 favourite New York set romantic movies that always keep her up well into the night.

When Harry Met Sally

“After twenty years this is still one of the best romantic comedies and one of my all time favourite movies. Insightful, funny and romantic, it explores the complexities of relationships and the question of whether men and women can ever just be friends. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are both #SleeplessInManhattan as they exchange late night phone calls. The film features one of the most famous scenes in romantic movie history, together with the most famous line; ‘I’ll have what she’s having.’” Katz Deli has been busy ever since.”

You’ve Got Mail

“Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are both #SleeplessInMahattan as they exchange furtive emails in the night. The theme of big bad bookstore owner gobbling up the small indie store is pure Harlequin Presents, which may be why I love this movie. It’s a New York classic, and has great shots of the city. It’s set mostly on the Upper West Side, with the ending filmed at the 91st St Garden, Riverside Park.”

One Fine Day

“Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney star in this enemies-to-lovers story. ‘Melanie’ is an architect and single mother whose temporary childcare crisis throws her in the path of ‘Jack’, a workaholic reporter. By the time George carries Michelle across a huge puddle (great shots of the famous Bethesda Fountain in Central Park), all is forgiven. And why not? Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to be #SleeplessInManhattan with George Clooney!”

Hitch

“Will Smith and Eva Mendes make an adorable couple in this movie about the perils and pitfalls of dating in New York City. Close to seventy four locations were used and much of it was filmed downtown, the main focus being the meatpacking district. The famous Manhattan skyline plays a starring role, along with the stylish Tribeca loft where ‘Hitch’ lives. Will might be #SleeplessInManhattan when a dinner date goes wrong, but he’s so funny and charming you know that even in the unforgiving world of New York romance, it won’t be long before he wins the girl! This movie has one of my favourite quotes: ‘Remember that ninety percent of what you’re saying isn’t coming out of your mouth’.”.

Enchanted

“Amy Adams is endearing and engaging as a fairytale princess banished from her animated world to Manhattan, only to meet her real-life Prince Charming Patrick Dempsey. Fantasy merges with ‘real life’ in this clever, fun and heart-warming love story that showcases some of New York’s top tourist spots. Filming in Central Park was hampered by Patrick Dempsey fans desperate to see ‘Dr McDreamy’ (Grey’s Anatomy). The scene where they dance together at the ‘King and Queen’s Costume Ball’ is sweet and romantic – what a way to be #SleeplessInManhattan!”
