New York Films Smash the Box Office in the US and UK

26 May 2012

This week saw the release of Men in Black 3 marking Will Smith’s first movie in four years shoot to the top of the US Box Office chart and The Dictator did the same across the puddle in the UK. Both films were shot in New York City and will feature in the location section of OTSONY later this year after the release of the DVD.

In the threequel, Will Smith's character travels back in time, where he meets a young Agent K, played by Josh Brolin. Tommy Lee Jones returns to play the older Agent K. Another film shot in New York City was the superhero film, Avengers, which so far has a worldwide gross of $1.24 billion, and is predicted to eclipse the final Harry Potter film which grossed $1.33 billion and become the third-biggest title of all time behind Avatar and Titanic. MiB 3 will soon be rolling out overseas, and the makers are hopeful that the event will clear $200 million in its worldwide debut, though warm weather in major European countries including the UK kept people away from the multiplex on the weekend.

Another film that was shot in New York and still holds a place in the UK Box Office after 3 weeks at the cinema is Safe starring Jason Statham. The film tells the story of Mei, a young girl whose memory holds a priceless numerical code, and who finds herself pursued by the Triads, the Russian mob, and corrupt NYC cops. Coming to her aid is an ex-cage fighter whose life was destroyed by the gangsters on Mei's trail.

With the recent posting of the films, Shame and We’ll Take Manhattan, OTSONY now hosts 698 films in the film location section. Bets are still on for which film will become the 700th film and the current favourites in the race are Man on the Ledge, Gumball Rally, New Year’s Eve and Sweet Charity.
