Allison Jones (Bridget Fonda) is a successful software designer working in bustling Manhattan, along with her successful career, she lives in a very trendy apartment and has a handsome boyfriend Sam. But when she finds out that Sam has been cheating on her, she has no option but to start out on her own. Determined not to lose her apartment, she advertises for a roommate. After failed interviews, she finally comes across Hedra Carlson (Jennifer Jason Leigh). At first everything seems to be running smoothly, with the self-centred Allison enjoying Hedra's company and her constant willingness to please. But things start to turn strange when Hedra begins copying Allison, her hair style, the clothes she wears and even the way she acts. When Allison decides to give her ex boyfriend, Sam, another chance and asks him to move in, she asks Hedra to look for new accommodation, unleashing a very weird and psychotic side to her roommate.

otsoNY Comments: The Ansonia is a building on the Upper West Side of New York City, located at 2109 Broadway, between West 73rd and West 74th Streets. It was originally built as a residential hotel by William Earle Dodge Stokes, the Phelps-Dodge copper heir and shareholder in the Ansonia Clock Company, and it was named for his grandfather, the industrialist Anson Greene Phelps. In 1897, Stokes commissioned French architect Paul Emile Duboy to design the grandest hotel in Manhattan.

otsoNY Comments: When this film was shot, the Ansonia had just been converted to a condominium apartment building with 430 apartments. By 2007, most of the rent-controlled apartment tenants had moved out, and the small apartments were sold to buyers who purchased clusters of small apartments and threw them together to recreate grand apartments.

otsoNY Comments: The Ansonia was appeared in several films including "Three Days of the Condor", the alley behind the hotel was used as a rendezvous for Robert Redford's character, which became an ambush for a failed assassination. In the film "The Sunshine Boys" it was Walter Matthau's character apartment building, and in 2001 the apartment building for Michael Douglas character in "Don's Say a Word.". It was also featured in the film "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" starring Uma Thurman and Luke Wilson, and in 2007, in the film "Perfect Stranger", Halle Berry plays a news reporter who lived in a professionally decorated $4-million condo in the lavish Ansonia building on the Upper West Side.
