Two Weeks Notice Revisit

7 January 2019

One of the very first films to be posted on otsoNY in 2009 was the romantic comedy “Two Weeks Notice” starring Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. Back then, Google Street view had only been running just over a year and the quality of the images were of low grade and not all streets and avenues of New York had been digitally photographed, so searching for film locations via the website wasn’t easy to do, but far easier than actually searching on foot. As otsoNY is based in the UK, Google Street View became an essential tool for identifying locations and has been used ever since, though there have been several trips to New York City to obtain higher quality images for a vast number of film locations.

The film was originally shot in 2002, and was in fact the first major production to go ahead after the events of September 11th. It followed dedicated environmental lawyer Lucy Kelson played by Sandra Bullock, who goes to work for billionaire George Wade played by Hugh Grant as part of a deal to preserve a community center. Indecisive and weak-willed George grows dependent on Lucy's guidance on everything from legal matters to clothing. Exasperated, Lucy gives notice and picks Harvard graduate June Carter as her replacement. As Lucy's time at the firm nears an end, she grows jealous of June and has second thoughts about leaving George.

One of the scenes was shot on East 83rd Street between 1st and 2nd Avenues at a disused office building. Back in 2002, the building at number 315 was in disarray and with the help of set designers was converted into a Legal Aid office. It was here that Sandra Bullock was captured by photographers as she exited the office and run after Hugh Grant, who was making his way along the street. The running scene was rehearsed several, and during that time Bullock wore trainers before swapping them for her kitten heel shoes when the cameras were ready to roll.

In 2008, a year before otsoNY was launched online showcasing only a handful of films, researching locations was often painstaking long, and in this case with only paparazzi photographs to go from. Since then, new techniques and clue finding play a much bigger part in locating unrecognisable sites though there are still places eluding otsoNY, which are posted in the Missing Locations page.

Two Weeks Notice will be revisited in January with all new high quality screen grabs and additional film locations added.
