Girlfriends (1978)

Last Updated: Dec 2025

Susan Weinblatt (Melanie Mayron), an aspiring photographer living in Manhattan, and her best friend Anne Munroe (Anita Skinner), an easygoing poet. The two women share a cramped apartment and a deep, intimate friendship that functions almost like a marriage—until Anne abruptly decides to get married and move out. Left alone for the first time, Susan struggles with loneliness, self-doubt, and the realities of trying to build a creative career. As she navigates failed relationships, financial insecurity, and professional setbacks, Susan also forms a tentative friendship with Rabinowitz (Eli Wallach), an older, eccentric rabbi who becomes an unexpected source of support and perspective. Meanwhile, Anne’s married life does not provide the fulfillment she expected, and the distance between the two women forces both to confront who they are outside of their friendship.
