New York music mogul David King (Denzel Washington) is poised to regain control of his label when he gets a ransom call: his young son has been kidnapped and the abductors demand $17.5 million. After calling the police, David discovers the kidnapper grabbed the wrong child—the victim is actually Kyle, the son of David’s driver and close confidant. Facing a moral and financial crisis, David must decide whether to risk his buyback deal to save a child who isn’t his. The investigation points to “Yung Felon,” an ex-con and aspiring rapper who idolizes David, leading to a tense confrontation and chase through the city. In the aftermath, David rejects exploiting the incident for profit, steps away from his old empire, and—with his family—backs fresh talent, symbolized by a final in-home audition from the singer Sula performing “Highest 2 Lowest.”
