Nonnas (2025)

Last Updated: Jan 2026

After the death of his beloved mother, Joe Scaravella (Vince Vaughn) feels unmoored—stuck in a job he hates and haunted by the traditions that once filled his home with warmth. Searching for purpose, Joe makes a bold, heartfelt decision: he uses his inheritance to open an Italian restaurant in Staten Island. But instead of hiring trained chefs, he recruits a group of real-life grandmothers—“nonnas”—from different Italian regions, each with her own recipes, rivalries, and fiercely held traditions. As the kitchen becomes a battleground of dialects, egos, and secret sauces, Joe must learn how to manage not just a restaurant, but a room full of strong-willed matriarchs who have spent lifetimes running families. Through laughter, conflict, and simmering pots of sauce, the nonnas help Joe rediscover joy, community, and the healing power of food—proving that sometimes the best way forward is to return to the table.

otsoNY Comments: With the real restaurant, Enoteca Maria, still being a popular hotspot, filming for the restaurant scenes had to take place elsewhere. The crew recreated the restaurant at Spiritos, an Italian restaurant in Elizabeth, New Jersey, which opened in 1932 but closed doors in 2020 due to the pandemic.

otsoNY Comments:The restaurant at the corner of 3rd Avenue and High Street in Elizabeth, New Jersey closed in 2020, and the building's facade has since changed.
