Successful author Ingrid (Julianne Moore) who reconnects with her dying former colleague and friend, war correspondent Martha (Tilda Swinton), who is battling terminal cervical cancer and chooses euthanasia over a slow decline. Martha asks Ingrid to stay with her in a rented house, not in the same room, but nearby, as she plans her assisted suicide, leading to deep discussions about mortality, friendship, the blurred lines between truth and fiction in writing, and the choices people make for loved ones.
